Welcome to the home for Ultimate Frisbee players in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Huck Cancer is right around the bend, with registrations opening Friday, January 13th at noon. The third annual co-ed hat tournament takes place on Saturday, March 3rd on the beautiful turf fields at Crocker Amazon from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Just like the first two Huck Cancer tournaments, we will be raising money to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) in solidarity with our friend, and defending tournament champion, Eric Arons. We're proud to say that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the LAF.
Last year, we raised over $50,000 to help fight cancer, for which we were officially recognized by the LAF, and we're hoping to match that number or exceed it this year. Just about all of us have been touched by cancer, whether we're fighting it ourselves or standing by a loved one, neighbor, co-worker or other friend. This is a good chance for us to take a swing back - and to have a great time playing Ultimate!
Our goal is to raise $50,000 again, and we have a number of prizes and incentives for players and fundraisers. Remember, just because you can't play doesn't mean you can't be involved. Non-playing fundraisers brought in thousands of dollars last year.
Check out the Huck Cancer tournament home page for more information.
Stay warm, play Ultimate all winter long! Here are the latest happenings:
Ocean Beach League - Well into its second season, the Beach League is tearing it up every Sunday. The regular season will conclude with two weekends of playoffs in March 2012 along with an end-of-season party. The league is in full swing, but the wait lists for both men and women will be actively processed throughout the season. For more information, visit the Ocean Beach League home page.
Youth Winter League - The Youth Division invites boys and girls in high school and middle school, from ages 11 to 18, to join our new developmental league. The main goal is to have fun and improve skills in preparation for the Youth Spring Club League and the HS/MS State Championships during the latter half of the school year. We had an excellent turnout in December, so we're expanding registrations going forward. This is an awesome opportunity for kids to learn the sport from our deep talent pool of adult players. All skill levels from beginners to advanced are welcome. At all times, we will emphasize Spirit Of The Game. For more information, visit the Youth Winter League home page.
East Bay Winter League It's nearly mid-season for this beginner-friendly, 14-team league, which will wrap up play in February. Games are played in Berkeley in a Mixed gender, 4:3 alignment. The wait list for men is still open, and spots for women still remain. Please consult the East Bay Winter League home page for more details.
San Francisco Winter League - It's trivia time, folks. Name the only league in the country where you're lining up across from USA Ultimate National Champions in the Women's, Open, and Mixed Divisions...possibly on the same point. Give up? Maybe it's time you drop by the Best Perspective blog, or else read up a little bit on the SF Winter League home page.

Our friends at DiscSpace.com announced themselves to our mailing list last summer, so here is a brief spin on our partnership with them, code-named Project High Release, as seen from this side of the field.
We selected DiscSpace from several candidate solutions, knowing that we must carry forward every great tool we have today (online payments, player directory, wait listing, add / drop, captain's tools, etc.) while filling in the gaps on missing functionality (tools for club teams, pickup, youth Ultimate).
The web site you see today at bayareadisc.org (yes, the one you're on right now) was never meant to be a permanent solution even though we've milked about 3 years' usage out of it (woo-hoo). One of the things with which we are most psyched about DiscSpace is their willingness to work with the community to build just the right tool for you.
The two main I.T. guys behind the scenes at bayareadisc.org (your good friends Jason Seidler and Eddie Yang) are anchoring this partnership on behalf of Bay Area Disc, helping DiscSpace build the kick-ass system that we and other Ultimate organizers around the country need. Jason and Eddie are not writing the code pe se, but they are channelling the collective wisdom of all Bay Area league organizers past and present to describe detailed user requirements and use cases to the DiscSpace team.
In case there are other I.T. professionals out there who want to pitch in and join Project High Release, we'll make opportunities available to you. Just wait for the word from us once a few more things get put into place. If you happen to be a Python or Javascript programmer, and are itching to write some code that will be used by thousands of Ultimate players like you, you can get involved by contacting Ethan Leland and the gang at DiscSpace directly.
Need help keeping track of it all? Check for updates and announcements on our Leagues Main Page, and make sure you get connected on our Mailing Lists & Facebook page (see below).
Our NEWS list is the largest Ultimate-related list in the country (according to an informal search on Yahoogroups), and we use it as the all-in-one Bay Area news channel for upcoming league registrations, tournament announcements, pick-up games, club team try-outs, and other disc related questions or announcements. As an active player in or near the San Francisco area, you cannot afford to not be on this list.
Our COMMUNITY list is the slightly less moderated, almost-anything-goes channel for local Ultimate players to connect with others. Here, we share news about carpools to tournaments, lost & found, apartments, local bands, gallery openings, and the occasional job posting. This list is also a place to practice the fine art of trash-talking. Posts to this list tend to be more peer-to-peer, by and for Ultimate players only.
NOTE: At this time, we are still trying to figure out our social media strategy, so when using Facebook, keep in mind that it is not the main source of information for any Bay Area Disc happenings. To really stay on top of Ultimate-related news in our area, check back to this web site regularly, and subscribe yourself to the News List, as described above. We guarantee that the web site and / or the email list are the primary channels of information. Facebook will become more integral to our operations once we've gotten some stuff figured out.
