Spring 2012 News

Bay Are Mixed Teams
Grillin' and Chillin' - Join Bay Area Mixed teams like American Barbecue (white) and Classy (shiny) at Memorial Day, Bash II, or CSL. If the club scene is not your game, we've got some super friendly hat leagues in Marin and San Francisco starting up soon, too.

Hat League Signups - May / June

Marin Ultimate Summer League - Registrations for Marin Ultimate Summer League (MUSL) open Wednesday, May 9th. The season's festivities kick off with not one, but two weeks of pickup at McInnis Park in San Rafael where we can all get reacquainted and welcome newcomers. Further details are described on the league's main home page.

SF Rec League - The Spring 2012 season has been underway since March. The Tuesday schedule and Thursday schedule have both been posted, along with the standings.

Attention Ladies! It's not too late to catch the last 1/3 of the season. We still have a handful of spots available on Thursday nights. Your league fee will be prorated. Games for most of the season have been at the Polo Field, but pretty soon we'll switch over to the Beach Chalet for the rest of the season.

In case spring is not your thing, preparations are already happening for our summer season. Check back later in May for updates. Better yet, sign up for our mailing list (aka NEWS List) so you get the word like an early bird (scroll down for mailing list signup instructions).

Club Tournaments Coming Soon - Bids Open NOW

Memorial Day Fundraiser - Now entering its 13th, and possibly last year (say it ain't so, Darcy!), the Memorial Day Tournament returns once again in 2012. This event is a one-day Mixed Division club team gathering and charity fundraiser in beautiful Marin County. Bids are open now, and you'll find full details on this mailing list announcement.

Bay Area Bash - Bids are open for Bay Area Bash II, a USA Ultimate sanctioned tournament that we're hosting July 7-8, 2012, at the Gilman Fields in Berkeley, CA. We'll accept bids from up to 20 Mixed Division teams. Team entry fee is $350 with the first $100 due as a deposit by June 1st. Fill out our Google Doc to start the application process, then await further instructions. If you have questions, contact the tournament director, Adam Farren - bayareabash (at) gmail (dot) com.

More Club Player News

But oh yes, there is more...

Club Summer League - We're still accepting bids from Mixed club teams for Club Summer League (CSL) 2012. We have an online Google Doc for you to fill out, and a required $100 deposit to hold your spot. The additional full team fee is $650, so $750 per team is due by the start of the season. Teams meeting a number of eligibility requirements qualify for refund of up to 100% of the $100 deposit by the end of the season. Think of it as a cleaning deposit with extra fancy toppings on it. Full details and registration / deposit links may be found on the league's main home page.

Club Team Tools on DiscSpace - While not a requirement, we strongly encourage all teams participating in CSL to check out DiscSpace.com and give the club team tools a try. The future is here, and this is your chance to provide feedback and see your great ideas turned into live tools for your team and the whole community. For this coming club season, local mixed teams Classy and American Barbecue are going all-in to manage their rosters, schedule practices, and all sorts of other cool things made available by DiscSpace. By this time next year, CSL and every one of our fabulous hat leagues and tournaments will be on DiscSpace.

If you'd like any assistance to set up a team page on DiscSpace, or to learn how to use the different tools, write to dmo (at) discspace (dot) com.

New in Town? Visiting this Summer? We have two tips for you. First, register to Club Summer League as an individual; while we cannot guarantee anything, we'll do our best to match you up with a Mixed club team in need. Secondly, be sure to join our NEWS mailing list or COMMUNITY mailing list. The NEWS list, especially, is where you want to be to hear of club team tryouts this spring. Scroll down this page for list registration intructions.

Fine, Fresh, Fierce, We Got It - The most rapid growth in Bay Area Ultimate is taking place right now in the youth ranks. Not only have our own Happy Cows brought home two titles in two years, but we have increased our offerings across the board for kids ages 8 to 17. And, this YCC highlight video shows that our kids have the stellar spirit to go with their sublime skill. Toned, tanned, fit and ready. Turn it up 'cause it's gettin' heavy.

California Kids - We're Undeniable

The Youth Division is on fire right now, offering summer camp registrations in Berkeley, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin. Early preparations are also going on for another tradition, which is the Youth Club Championships (YCC), sponsored by USA Ultimate. Our very own Happy Cows are the two-time defending champions in the Mixed Division, going for a three-peat this year. Check out the highlight video from the 2011 event. We also held our first-ever Youth Spring League, which finished in April.

Project High Release (ongoing in 2012)

Our friends at DiscSpace.com announced themselves to our mailing list last summer, so here is a brief spin on our partnership with them, code-named Project High Release, as seen from this side of the field.

We selected DiscSpace from several candidate solutions, knowing that we must carry forward every great tool we have today (online payments, player directory, wait listing, add / drop, captain's tools, etc.) while filling in the gaps on missing functionality (tools for club teams, pickup, youth Ultimate).

The web site you see today at bayareadisc.org (yes, the one you're on right now) was never meant to be a permanent solution even though we've milked about 3 years' usage out of it (woo-hoo). One of the things with which we are most psyched about DiscSpace is their willingness to work with the community to build just the right tool for you.

The two main I.T. guys behind the scenes at bayareadisc.org (your good friends Jason Seidler and Eddie Yang) are anchoring this partnership on behalf of Bay Area Disc, helping DiscSpace build the kick-ass system that we and other Ultimate organizers around the country need. Jason and Eddie are not writing the code pe se, but they are channelling the collective wisdom of all Bay Area league organizers past and present to describe detailed user requirements and use cases to the DiscSpace team.

In case there are other I.T. professionals out there who want to pitch in and join Project High Release, we'll make opportunities available to you. Just wait for the word from us once a few more things get put into place. If you happen to be a Python or Javascript programmer, and are itching to write some code that will be used by thousands of Ultimate players like you, you can get involved by contacting Ethan Leland and the gang at DiscSpace directly.

Huck Cancer 2012
And That! - Congratulations to all Huck Cancer Tournament participants who gathered March 3rd in San Francisco. For the 2nd year in a row, we hit our goal of $50,000, making us the #1 LIVESTRONG Grassroots Fundraising event in the nation. Photo by: Adrian Cotter.

Huck Cancer III Recap

Blue skies, warm sun, and high spirits cast a glow on the record-high 120 players who took to the field fo r this year's Huck Cancer Tournament on March 3rd in San Francisco. Everybody deserves a hearty CONGRATULATIONS all around for once again surpassing the goal of $50,000, making us the #1 LIVESTRONG Grassroots Fundraising event in the nation.

New to this year's event was a 9th team comprised of Youth Division players who helped deliver a swift blow in the cancer fight (to say nothing of their exploits against adult competitors). We were also joined by a guest from Austin, TX, Brian Myers, who works at the national headquarters of LIVESTRONG. Says Brian, "I hope you all took a moment to realize how special [that day] was. Eric was not dealt the best situation by any means, but you all have taken that and turned into a very special and positive day that inspires so many. It is amazing, and you all are the reason that I love my job. Thank you so much for that."

After playing Ultimate for the first time in his life with the Groovin' team, he added, "It's official, I am a converted ultimate player now! I have already scouted out a pick up league on Sundays here in Austin!" The early word is that Brian would like to return in 2013 with a whole team of LIVESTRONG personnel to play our event. Hint: Look for the yellow jerseys, and be cool if one of them turns out to be you-know-who (we're not saying Lance is coming to Huck Cancer 2013...but we'll make sure Brian works on him).

Need help keeping track of it all? Check for updates and announcements on our Leagues Main Page, and make sure you get connected on our Mailing Lists & Facebook page (see below).

Mailing Lists & Facebook

News List

Our NEWS list is the largest Ultimate-related list in the country (according to an informal search on Yahoogroups), and we use it as the all-in-one Bay Area news channel for upcoming league registrations, tournament announcements, pick-up games, club team try-outs, and other disc related questions or announcements. As an active player in or near the San Francisco area, you cannot afford to not be on this list.

Community List

Our COMMUNITY list is the slightly less moderated, almost-anything-goes channel for local Ultimate players to connect with others. Here, we share news about carpools to tournaments, lost & found, apartments, local bands, gallery openings, and the occasional job posting. This list is also a place to practice the fine art of trash-talking. Posts to this list tend to be more peer-to-peer, by and for Ultimate players only.

Find Us on Facebook

NOTE: At this time, we are still trying to figure out our social media strategy, so when using Facebook, keep in mind that it is not the main source of information for any Bay Area Disc happenings. To really stay on top of Ultimate-related news in our area, check back to this web site regularly, and subscribe yourself to the News List, as described above. We guarantee that the web site and / or the email list are the primary channels of information. Facebook will become more integral to our operations once we've gotten some stuff figured out.
