About Us

The mission of Bay Area Disc Association is to foster good sportsmanship by teaching and providing opportunities to play the amateur sport of Ultimate (also known as "ultimate frisbee") throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We believe that Ultimate's spirit of good sportsmanship, in which players self-officiate, can provide a model for individual and social responsibility. We focus on promoting the growth of Ultimate amongst adults and youth while simultaneously raising funds for nonprofit organizations in the communities it serves.

General Information

Who We Are

Bay Area Disc Association was founded in 2008 by the leaders of the San Francisco Ultimate League, San Francisco Ultimate Club, Bay Area Youth Ultimate, East Bay Ultimate League and Marin Ultimate Summer League.

Each of these leagues will continue to operate as they have since their respective foundings, while at the same time, the new organization will combine governance, resources, finances, leadership and planning under a single governing board of directors.

This consolidated organization produces many advantages:

  • We have better capacity to support youth Ultimate in the Bay Area, recruit coaches, foster new programs and create new teams.
  • Through shared finances we gain financial leverage to consider new leagues, better field management and the possibility of (dare we dream it?) paid staff.
  • We are building a stronger organization from which we can nurture new leadership and create new opportunities for Ultimate.
  • We are reducing redundancy in our operations.
  • We are strengthening the Bay Area Ultimate community as a whole.

These advantages are made possible, in part, by Community Initaitives, who is the fiscal sponsor of Bay Area Disc. Scroll down to "Our Fiscal Sponsor: Community Initiatives" for more information.

Our Fiscal Sponsor: Community Initiatives

We are a fiscally-sponsored project of Community Initiatives (CI), an arrangement which means first and foremost that Bay Area Disc now has 501(c)(3) non-profit status. Combined with other aspects of fiscal sponsorship, every member of the Ultimate community benefits in the following ways:

Liability Insurance Coverage - CI underwrites our liability insurance, which means that participants in Bay Area Disc events do not need to sign up or pay for coverage elsewhere. You only need to sign and submit our liability waiver. This is a significant difference from what college and club players, or players in other leagues, may be accustomed to, so we encourage you to examine our Revised Liability Requirements if you have questions.

Fundraising & Donations - We can more easily add a charitable component to our Ultimate-related activities, raising funds for causes and other non-profit organizations in which we believe. We can accept and process charitable donations.

Human Resources Infrastructure - We can hire paid staff and further professionalize our operations.
