Bay Area Disc summer camps return in 2011 for the 3rd year as the marquee event for the growing Youth Division. Boys and girls ages 8 to 15 are invited to come learn and improve their skills in one of the fastest-growing and fun sports on the planet.
ULTIMATE is an exciting, fast-paced, non-contact team sport with unique characteristics like self-officiation and coed play at the highest levels. In keeping with the foundation of the sport, our camp's philosophy is "Safety, Fun, Skills, and Spirit Of The Game." Not only will your kids get great exercise and have fun playing Ultimate, they will learn about teamwork, sportsmanship and other character building values. No prior experience is required, so beginners are welcome and encouraged. More experienced participants will have the opportunity to explore advanced concepts from our elite coaching staff.
Each camp runs Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Both camps are in great locations with natural grass fields surrounded by trees and nearby playgrounds.
Campers will develop their skills through a combination of personalized one-on-one instruction, group drill stations, and supervised scrimmages. Here's what our camp philosophy, "Safety, Fun, Skills and Spirit of the Game," means to us:
SAFETY: Your children's safety is very important to us. We guarantee supervision at all times, active injury prevention, and competition between similar levels of proficiency, maturity, size and strength. Our counselors are trained and experienced and the CPR/First Aid-certified Camp Director will be present all week.
FUN: Our goal is to provide an enjoyable overall experience that allows kids to make new friends and rise to meet new challenges. We use our passion for the sport and our positive approach to help increase kids' self-awareness and self-esteem.
SKILLS: Teaching skills effectively is our priority. Participants will learn a variety of field roles with an emphasis on solid fundamentals. We use age-appropriate activities to work on psychomotor, coordination, and technical skills, as well as individual and team tactical skills.
SPIRIT OF THE GAME: As a self-officiated sport founded on Spirit Of The Game, Ultimate is the perfect context for teaching good sportsmanship and respect for opponents. Our coaches lead by example!
The camps cost $210 per session.
We provide snacks during the day.
To register, create a user account, and then follow our easy 3-step registration process. If you registered your child (ren) in our summer camp in 2009 or 2010, you can reuse the same Parent Profile you created at that time.
Parents who sign up for multiple sessions receive a $50 discount. This discount is good within the same family, and is applicable for 1 child attending multiple sessions or 2 or more children in the same session. To apply for the discount, complete registration in our online system, but do NOT follow the PayPal link right away. Instead, notify the Camp Director so we can adjust your total balance appropriately.
If you have any questions, please write to the Camp Director at camps (at) bayareadisc (dot) org.
UPDATE, 7/8/2011: Online registrations have closed for 2011. If you're interested in doing a late registration offline for San Mateo, wrote to the Camp Director.
If you're already registered to the summer camp, then please look over the Camper Checklist. This page lists two important forms for you to fill out and bring to the Monday check-in at 8:30 AM. We also have some Ultimate-specific recommendations for attire & equipment.
Valerio Iani has been working for over 10 years in Ultimate program management, coordination and coaching, with an emphasis on youth development. He brings his expertise to the Youth Division for the first time in 2011, taking over as Summer Camp Director for program founder, Jordan Rose.
Mr. Iani has previously organized youth Ultimate leagues, camps, clinics and after-school programs in the U.S., Italy, and Spain. Additionally, he ran a two-year program using Ultimate as an educational tool for inner-city and at-risk teens while working as Program Director for the University of Bologna Athletics Department. As Project and Outreach Coordinator for the Italian Flying Disc Federation, Mr. Iani created a ground-breaking national youth program, holding the first youth championships and sending boys and girls teams to represent Italy for the first time in the junior divisions of the World Ultimate Championships.
Valerio's latest side project is an introductory website specifically geared to P.E. teachers, funded in part by a grant from USA Ultimate.
Geoff Rexroth has coached the Ultimate Frisbee Club at Granada High School in Livermore, CA for the last 3 years from 2008 to 2011, building the program from scratch using all first-year players. In 2011, Mr. Rexroth returns for his third year as a summer camp counselor. He has 7 years of overall experience working with kids, which includes running an after-school Ultimate mini-league at Croce Elementary School.
His favorite memory from his tenure at Croce Elementary School occurred when they wrote letters and drew pictures for Team USA in 2005. Team USA wrote back after returning from the World Games in Germany, saying that the kids helped inspire them to a gold medal win on the same day their letters and pictures arrived. "The kids were totally geeked about it," says Geoff. "I still get kids coming up to me when I see them talking about how much fun they had playing Ultimate and about that one experience."
Mr. Rexroth has been a competitive Ultimate player at the college and club levels for the last 7 years. He began his playing career at Las Positas College where his teams won the Division III National Championship in 2006 and finished as Nationals runner-up in 2007 and 2008. His Ultimate-related tournament travels at the club level have taken him to Santa Cruz, Oregon, and Ohio.

Dan Haas has coached the Ultimate Frisbee Club at Burlingame Intermediate School for the last 7 years from 2004 to 2011. Being on campus daily as one of the school's Physical Education teachers, he spends every lunch hour with members of the frisbee club as a supplement to their weekly practices. The team, known as BID (Burlingame Intermediate Disc) and composed of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, has made regular apperances at local tournaments in the Bay Area since 2006.
Prior to his coaching career at Burlingame Intermediate, Mr. Haas played competitive Ultimate at Chico State University, Las Positas College, and in many club-level tournaments which have taken him to Canada, Hawaii, and all over California. Dan's favorite motto is, "When a ball dreams, it dreams it's a frisbee."
Jordan Rose started the Youth Division from the ground up, launching the summer camps and Youth Club Leagues in 2009. In 2010, he provided much of the impetus for the formation of the Happy Cows, an all-star team that came together quickly and won the Mixed Division crown at the USA Ultimate Youth Club Championships (YCC). His dedication and leadership has made it possible for the Youth Division to continue and expand its operations in 2011.
Mr. Rose has coached the Ultimate Frisbee Club at Berkeley High School for the last 5 years from 2007 to 2011. The team's accomplishments during his tenure at Berkeley High School include appearances at the NorCal State Championships from 2007 through 2009 as well as an 11th place finish at the UPA Western High School Ultimate Championships in 2007. Students from his program have gone on to have successful playing careers at UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, Brown, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, Washington University and NYU.
Prior to his coaching career at Berkeley High School, Mr. Rose played competitive Ultimate for more than 20 years in New York City, Amherst, Massachusetts, Eugene, Oregon and here in the East Bay.
